some things won't last 25 years. ah! woof! some things will. breaking news this morning actually traffic alert on the beltway in preliminary county. a crash overnight involving a fire truck, a big rig and an suv sent several people to the those an is causing major delays. we are live on the scene with the very latest on this accident and also will tell you how to get around some of the traffic problems this is causing. plus, some of the wild weather making headlines today. is calm right now but a threat of severe storms is in our forecast. we are not talking snow. it is wednesday, january 30th.

good morning. i'm sarah simmons. >> i'm wisdom martin. with get more on the accident in just a moment. first, let's check in with tucker barnes to give us an update on the weather situation. >> good morning. nice, mild start to the day. temperatures, it depends on where you are. they range from the low 40s to the 60s. we will see highs again near 07 this afternoon. it will be one more mild day and then the fireworks start tonight as that front moves in from the west. there is a live look at the radar. your morning commute will be fine. northeast of your day will be cloudy. you might see a peek of sunshine but you will notice the wind out of the south and a very breezy day, blustery day with winds out of the south gusting at times to about 30 up ahead of that front. we'll kick off a period of heavy rain around here tonight, an inch or two of rain. we've only picking up about an inch so far this month. we may get a month total in just a few hours time. this front very active this morning. tornado warnings into portions

of ken quebec and earlier in tennessee so a very active front. that will be moving through tonight. more detail on that in just a minute. 55 at reagan national. 59 at dulles and cooler at bwi marshall. highs up near 07 by midday and rain develops late this afternoon and it will be heavy at times tonight and very breezy. veil more details on the weather and a much cooler pattern coming up in just a minute. >> thank you. breaking news this morning. for more on the serious accident on the beltway, we go live to melanie alnwick. >> we have a little bit of improvement in the traffic situation at this hour. take a look. you can see here on the inner loop of the beltway, we now have two of the regular lanes getting by as well as a few minutes ago, they still were also using the shoulder lane. on the outer loop of the beltway, as we swing back around here past the scene over to the other side, you can see that at least three of those

lanes are getting by on the outer loop. so the scene is starting to collapse a little bit here as they get to cheap up some of of the debris that is going on. the accident happened just before 3:00 this morning. there was a fire truck that was rear ended by a tractor- trailer. it went over the jersey wall and an suv then got involved in the accident as well. in all, seven people injured including four firefighters. one. those firefighters now we have learned is in critical condition. taken to union memorial hospital in baltimore. the p tb. fire chief didn't want to speculate on the injuries except to tell us that union memorial hospital is the type of hospital that specializes in injuries to limbs. they are continuing the investigate. they are still trying to understand exactly what happened with the tractor- trailer. wear working on clean-up now. they are having to clean up a lot of the debris. the tractor-trailer did not lose any of its load but the

prince george's county fire chief described the damage to the cab as completely decimated. so really just a crazy accident here this morning on the inner loop of the beltway. but as you can see, hour by hour, things are getting a little bit better as far as improving the situation but right at this area, we are still waiting for people to come and remove the fire truck and also the tractor-trailer so we'll be here to keep giving you updates. back to you guys. >> thank you. time now to check in with julie wright. she will help us and a half gate around the traffic tie-ups out in that area. >> we are doing our best. there are the live picture from the ground right there behind melanie. the fire truck and the tractor- trailer both still here overturned on that jersey wall. that is where we had a lot of debris that was spread out on the highway that they had to leer off the outer loop of the beltway. so again, just to reiterate when she said. if you are coming northbound on

95, 459 from andrews headed up towards landover, three right lanes are now available for you. if you are coming southbound from prince george's county leaving greenbelt, two right lanes are now able to get by. but again, callers have told me at least a 45-minute wait trying to get from 202 to 50. that is just one exit apart there. a 45-minute wait trying to get northbound on the outer loop of the beltway. now, very much a slow ride on both loops of the beltway with the inner loop starting to slow back at the baltimore- washington parkway. let's pull up the maps. accident occurred here at landover south of 50. suggesting you stick with 295. use this as your north to south alternate as you travel between college park and oxon hill. you do not want to commit to the east side of the beltway at this time if you can avoid it. let's pop up what else is going on out here on the roads. route 7 eastbound at sterling boulevard, accident in the left lane. route one, police activity has it shut down as you cross over

the rappahannock river. the red line is experiencing additional delays this morning. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. now, to other news. a bizarre hostage situation is developing in alabama. police say an elderly man boarded a school bus yesterday, shot and killed the driver and then took off way six-year-old student. the suspect took the child to an area behind the nearby church where police are still northing with him at this hour. local media there reporting the hostage is a boy and is being held in a storm shelter at the alleged gunman's home. the fbi is on the scene and area schools have been canceled -- all the classes have been canceled for the day. on capitol hill today, the first hearing on gun violence since the mass shooting in newtown, connecticut. mark kelly, retired astronaut and husband of former senator gabrielle giffords will testify in front of the senate judiciary committee. he will talk about the need for

more background checks and limits on high capacity magazines. all set to speak today, wayne la pierre of the nra. he has come under fire for saying that all schools should have armed guards. a maryland high school student is due in court today accused of shooting a disabled classmate. 15-year-old robert gladden has been charged as an adult with attempted first degree murder for the shooting at perry hall high school. prosecutors say gladden fired a shotgun at random at a lunch table where several students were sitting hitting 17-year- old ban yell borowy who has down's syndrome. a former police officer has been found guilty of shooting an unarmed woman to death. danial harmon wright was convicted of three counts yesterday. he responded for a call bay suspicious person in a parking lot last february and encountered 54 engineered patricia cook in a car. he says they argued and she

rolled up the window on his arm and tried to drive away. harmon wright says he shot her seven times. >> i felt like it was unjustified from the very beginning. the only question was what grade of homicide was it. so i'm going to ask the court for a significant penalty that reinforces the message this was wrong. you heard the defendant at the end of his testimony say he would do the exact same thing over again. so i feel that it is important to reinforce the message that that is the wrong attitude. >> harmon wright is facing up to 25 years in prison. still ahead, a first for south korea as it joins an a late club in space technology. >> still, so many questions but this morning, new details from the band about what sparked that deadly fire inside a brazilian nightclub. we'll be right back.

south korea launched a rocket into space overnight.

it is the first time it successfully put a satellite into orbit and comes just weeks after its rival north korea surprised the world with its open satellite lawn. we are learning more about that nightclub fire that killed over 230 people in brazil. the police inspector said band members knowingly bought flares meant for outdoor use because they were cheaper than indoor flares. people carrying banners and signs filled the streets in front of the santa maria police station demanding justice. there are still nearly 100 people on ventilators at the hospital. boeing is on the hot seat. coming up, what they knew about the reliability of the dreamliner batteries before a series of failures.

a live look outside. the d.c. region is waking up to warm, calm weather outside right now. things are going to change as they often do this time of the year. we go from cold to hot and hot to cold. it is all over the place. that is what we can expect, some change on the way. >> big changes. >> first, you will notice the warm temperatures and the winds. that will be the first half of the day. later this afternoon, rain will arrive. it will be heavy at time. potentially heavy at times. maybe even a thunderstorm and the cool air rushes in behind t it is an action-packed weather day. >> action-packed all the way around. we've got a lot going on. >> the big headline being one more warm day. we hit 69 at reagan national. we'll be awfully close to that again. most of us at least into the 60s. if you are close to town here, you will probably be close to 70. looking for a bike ride outdoors. take the dog for a long walk, that kind of thing. we should be nice and dry for the first half of the day. rain won't get in here until late this afternoon. here are your temperatures and let me mention, there is a

little bit of a front that has been hanging out. the same front that brought us the warm temperatures hanging up just to our north. places like baltimore are only 41 degrees. fredericksburg, 65. 63 in manassas. then you are hooking at 30s in hagerstown. 38degrees. a little bit of a front just to our north. that front will get pushed well up to the north and east today as our cold front approaches from the west. we could be in for i awindy day. let me mention the winds out of the south here gusting at time over 30. winds will only continue to pick up here as this cold front approaches from the west. tornado warning across kept ken and tennessee this. front, the real deal. you want to time out rain showers. i think they will get in here late this afternoon bed and the heaviest rain will be during the nighttime hours between about 7:00 tonight and 2:00,

3:00 in the morning and the whole front should be east of us. behind the front, the cooler air will start to rush n up ahead of the front, temperatures unseenably warm. we deal with the rain tonight, maybe thunderstorms. the cooler air gets a chaps to rush in here and back to normal by tomorrow. here are your wind advisories in brown. if you are east of the bay, under a wind advisory. out to the west, we have winds that are expected to be close to other mirpdz along some of of the rim lines later today. if you are traveling in that direction, be ready for some very windy conditions. the green you see, that is a floodwatch, potential for some flash flooding later tonight as we are expecting a period of heavy rain here with that front. 07 today. i know you are rubbing your eyes but you're reading it right. -- we have winds that are expected to be closer to other miles per hour along the ridge lines. 07 today, just 45 tomorrow. we could have i brief period of light snow around here friday

morning. that is cool with highs only in the 30s and then just about where we should be for early february as we turn the corner to our next month. that is weather. late do some traffic and julie wright who has been busy with all things beltway this morning. >> you got that right. dew want to say welcome back, we missed you. >> on the beltway, this is what occurred around 3:00 this morning. tractor-trailer, fire truck, a prince george's fire truck and an suv involved in this crash on the inner loop of the beltway south of 50, the john hanson highway. it looks like they are trying to get this back upright so they can pull it out of your way. we are told the trailer did not split in two but the cab according to authorities is decimated. the inner loop coming from greenbelt starting to seat delays form south of the baltimore-washington parkway headed out to the scene. two right lanes are be a to get by. outer loop of the beltway coming northbound from andrews

air force base, three rate lean able to get by. authorities tell us or state highway that the inner loop, southbound 95, 295, the two left lanes will remain closed on our morning drive. let's pull up the map quickly. again, as an alternative route since we've got the crash here south of 50 and the two left lane will remain closed through our morning drive, i'm he strongly suggesting you stick with 295 and use that as the workaround as you travel from the north to the south. 66 eastbound, below speed out of manassas headed eastbound towards centerville. traffic slows again, other to 123. 395 on the brake leaving edsall road towards seminary road with lanes open. 95 is backing up in stafford. we have police activity blocking route one in each direction as you cross over the rappahannock river. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic.

more trouble for boeing now. the company apparently knew about problems with the 787's batteries before first incident earlier this month. u.s. regulate ires asked boeing today to provide a full operating history of lithium ion batteries used in its grounded dreamliners. this after an airline in japan revealed it had replaced the battery some 10 times before the overheating issues started to surface. blackberry attempts a comeback. we'll go live to fox business network in new york with all the details. >> if you are a youtube user, you might be asked to pay up soon. the video sharing site is set to launch paid subscriptions for some channels that will reportedly cost between $1 and $5 a month. back after this. ♪

from the gulf coast to the great lakes, a big part of the region is dealing with some wild weather. down south, report of three tornadoes overtight and in the midwest a january meltdown. it was in the 60s in chicago yesterday. this is january. after days with temperatures in the teens. a little bit closer tomorrow home, we are in for another day of warm temperatures. set veer weather could strike later on today. the latest on all this, here is tucker barnes. >> a wild roller coaster. >> you saw there that is the live look at our radar. we've got tornado warnings not locally but out into ken kept and tennessee this morning. that front is very active. up ahead of, it another unseasonably warm day. about 70 later today. so enjoy spring-like temperatures and then big-time cooldown later tonight. a lot going o lepts a get to

it. we'll start with local temperatures. regional temperatures, 55 here in washington. -- a lot going on. let's get to it. baltimore is only 41 at this hour. you notice temperatures in the 60s to the south and into the 40s to the north so all over the place. bottom line, we'll warm up again just like yesterday. up he were 60s to about 70. it will be very windy with winds out of the south gusting to about 30 at times. and then we'll get some rain by late this afternoon and tonight. another look at your satellite- radar. here come the rain showers. again, potentially some thunderstorms as well around here later tonight. most of your day will be cloudy and university kind of warm and then potential for maybe an inch or two of rain later tonight and then behind that front, the colder air will filter in. on our seven-day forecast, we've got potential snow showers as early as friday morning. ill ashow you that coming up. 70 in washington. 07 in quantity i so and 63 in frederick. temperatures about 25 degrees above normal.

>> i still can't believe i'm seeing the temperatures on the map there. >> enjoy. you won't see them again on the seven-day forecast. >> they are all over the place. >> let's check in with julie now to get the latest on traffic out there. >> on-time traffic brought to you by toyota. the big story has got to be the accident here on the inner loop of the beltway south of john hanson highway. this involves a tractor- trailer, an suv and a bridge fire truck. we are still seeing the back end of the tractor-trailer flipped over the jersey wall. a little bit of a fuel spill because we noticed they are spreading sand out. what this means for folks on the outer loop is that delays are starting to form back near andrews air force base headed up towards the scene. inner loop now starting to stack up leaving the beltway. two right lanes get by on the inner loop. three right lanes available on the outer. traveling inbound from the

north to the south, you want to avoid this area here in landover. new problems to report here though. southbound on the baltimore- washington parkway at 450, there is a crash. at least three cars involved. delays for this growing from greenbelt road. that's a check of your fox 5 on-time traffic. e traffic. >> thank you. we continue to follow that breaking news that she just mentioned on the beltway this morning. seven people are in the hospital following an early morning crash. >> fox 5's melanie a.m. -- alnwick is is live on the scene with the latest there. >> reporter: good morning. if you can kind of look behind me here, i know there are a lot of lights there it can be hard to make out. the engine 858 from west lanham hills is now upright but part of the tractor-trailer is still on the side there. so the scene here is starting to collapse a little bit as they are really just getting down to the final parts of the clean-up here on the inner loop of the beltway.

again, we've got three lanes of traffic flowing in both directions. on the inner loop, they are using the shoulder lane as well. you notice the sand that is down on the road. state highway crews have been coming by and putting this absorbent down because they say there may be some slick spots on the beltway. they will be continuing to -- every once there a while, they'll stop traffic and get the sand trucks back in and out across this section of the beltway. let's go to some video that we shot earlier today. again, 2:45 this morning. the 858 fire engine from west lanham hills had responded to an accident on route 50 near the beltway. they are cleared from that scene. they were heading back to the fire station on the inner loop of the beltway when they were rear ended by the tractor- trailer. and then those two flipped over, cross the jersey wall and into the oncoming traffic on the outer loop and that is

where a third vehicle, an suv then got flipped over and involved in this accident as well. again, seven people injured in all. four of them firefighters. one of those firefighters in critical condition taken to union memorial hospital in baltimore. here is how the fire chief described the scene. >> we've got a couple hours worth of work left here. the fire engine is probably totaled. it is in pieces. the equipment still needs to be picked up and towed out of here and taken to our facility. the tractor-trailer is on its side. it is full. we believe it has food in there. it will take some time to get that uprighted. >> reporter: they are making peroty good progress here. can't tell you exactly when all of the lane on the beltway are going to be open. and then relate lay the question begins of what happened and how and what are they going to do in west lanham

hills without this very expensive fire engine to help them out. so those will be the follow-up questions to ask later on. back to you guys. >> thank you. acheck of this morning's other top stories now. maryland governor martin o'malley will deliver the state after the state speech at noon today. there will be a new feature today. residents will be able to submit questions to the governor, lieutenant governor and other members of the o'malley administration. they can use twitter, facebook and the maryland government web site to do this. we have the information and links on myfoxdc.com if you would like to submit a question. d.c. now has more than $1 billion saved in the bank. all thanks to a recent $400 million surplus. the tax payers shouldn't expect to see any of that money. mayor gray announced yesterday that all of the money will stay in the city savings account. the extra money was raised through the speed camera fines, corporate taxes and one very high estate tax. many disagree with the mayor's decision saying some of it should go towards helping lower

city taxes and funding the district's social services. >> i'm sure the city needs some as well but the taxpayer need it back if they can get it to them. >> this past spring and summer, we had dozen of children sleeping on the streets because we don't have a right to shelter year round for families. >> the mayor later said he is not completely ruling out lower being taxes in the future but he did not specify just how much the district would have to have in the bank for that to happen. president barack obama laying out his plans to fix the nation's immigration system in las vegas just a day after i agroup of eight republican and democratic senators offered their own proposal. the biggest difference is the president's plan gives a faster path to citizenship for the millions already here illegally. >> yes, they broke the rules. they cross the border illegally. maybe they overstayed their visas. those are the facts. nobody disputes them. but these 11 million men and women are now here. many of them have been here for

years. >> another difference with the senate plan is the president's proposal would extend family immigration rights to gay couples. a welcoming ceremony for john kerry is planned for monday at the state department. the senate easily confirmed him as the next secretary of state. lawmaker on both side have praised kerry as the ideal successor to hillary clinton who is stepping down on friday. what you know about that? >> i know a lot about it. i don't know who it is. it is time now for the morning line. >> going old school on you. caps tried to go north of the border and get a big w. trying to make it two in a row. >> tucker barnes asked me, he is like dave, are the caps going to playoffs. at this point, we don't know. it is early but we wanted to

so much so, this is what gio said on twitter. he said never met or spoken with tony bosch or used any substance provided by him. anything said to the contrary is a lie. ray lewis, we had the super bowl media day. supposed to be all fun. ask stupid questions. >> it is supposed to be. >> until a sports illustrated report came out yesterday. ray was told this was going to come out that he had requested to get some help to repair his torn tricep that he suffered earlier in the year with an illegal substance contained in deer antler spray. ray has never and i repeat never failed a drug test and he has been tested often. so he vehemently denied it as well and said to even talk about this story as you're leading up to his final day as

transplant. he lost all four of his limbs in an explosion in iraq. he says he will always remember the first time he moved his new arms. >> i was sitting there with my friends and did it by accident and one of my friend was just like freaking out. he was like did you do that on purpose? no, i didn't know i was doing it. >> his doctors say in a few years, he will be able to tie his open shoes and use chop stikine but for the near future, he will spend hours a day in physical therapy learning how to use the new arms. a lot of work ahead of him but so happy he is able to have this and move on. >> it's miracle. >> and we said, has come a long way. hopefully, this all work out and this can become more of a common thing. >> something in the future.

monday, we didn't do this because we had weather we were dealing with. yesterday, we did a football related question. today's is football related. we are trying to get a bunch of football questions in. there are a lot of them. this is from rhonda britton. she writes i notice that all of the national football teams names are attached to a city or a state. why are the patriots attached to a region, new england, rather than a city or state? excellent question, rhonda. there are several things going on here. we've got a lot of information and we'll address a couple of past questions too. let's jump right into this. the new england patriots, they were a part of the new league, the afl, back in the '50s i guess it was and the '60s. when they original nate, they were indeed the boston patriots. however, whether they joined the -- when the nf element and the afl merged, they were

placed in the afc east division and they moved to foxboro in 1971. they changed the name from the boston patriots to the -- well, actually, they first changed their name to the bay state patriots. >> i didn't know that. >> the nfl rejected that name, said no, that is not a good name. they became the new england patriots. now, why did they choose new england? well, there are some reasons. tucker? >> well, i think the leading reason is boston is the big city up there in new england and when they put the team in foxboro, they sort of the positioned it between boston and providence which are the two big cities in new england. it is all about getting your regional viewer zip. and with new york not too far away, the openers of the patriots wanted to ensure that they would have a large fan base so by making it new england, they medicine it more of an umbrella to all of the smaller states up there that cooperate support a team by themselves. >> if you think about it, no

other team in new england would generate enough viewership attendance in all likelihood because boston is the biggest city up there. >> it is all-inclusive. >> right. trying to ward off the influence of new york teams in that area which goes on here too actually. >> in fact, locally here, we all know, if you've lived here for any period of time, jack kept cook was not a fan of others getting a team. they tried to encroach on other territory there. it is all about your viewership. >> viewership and fan base. so there you go, rhonda. two other things. jim frisk of wheaton, maryland wrote in. we talked about why the super bowl was played late in the day

on sundays. he points out something correct that we did not mention. one of the reasons is played late in the day is to accommodate west coast viewers. we failed to mention that. we got a question about why are nfl games played on sunday. everything we told you was right but we left out one fact. early in the history of professional football, football player made almost no money. they all had regular jobs. they worked during week so the only time they were available was on the weekend. we told you they couldn't play -- they tried to saturdays but college football dominated so sunday became the choice. >> that happens in the lingerie league. the player got to go back to the regular jobs. >> leave it to tucker. >> of course. >> leave it to tucker. >> right now, they have to go to work. >> it is affiliated with the nfl, we know. >> if you have a question you want answered, go to
